New Year, New Medicare Plan? You Still Have Time to Make a Change

New Year, New Medicare Plan? You Still Have Time to Make a Change

January Medicare Check-In: You Still Have Options Through March 31

January is the time of year when many Medicare beneficiaries begin using their new health plan and ask an important question:

“Did I make the right choice?”

If you’re experiencing issues with your Medicare Advantage plan, such as unexpected copays, prescription problems, or provider network surprises, you are not stuck. There is still time to make a change.

What Is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?

From January 1 through March 31, Medicare Advantage members are in a special window called the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. This time is specifically designed to help people who realize their plan isn’t meeting their needs.

During this period, you can:

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare
  • Add a standalone Part D prescription drug plan if returning to Original Medicare

This enrollment period is only for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan—it’s meant to fix problems, not add new coverage for the first time.

Common Issues We See in January

January is when real-life plan usage begins, and that’s when issues often appear, such as:

  • Doctors or specialists no longer being in network
  • Prescriptions costing more than expected
  • Prior authorizations delaying care
  • Copays higher than anticipated
  • Benefits not working the way they were explained

If any of these sound familiar, it’s important not to ignore them.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Many people assume they must wait until the fall Annual Enrollment Period to make changes. That’s not always true. Waiting could mean months of higher costs or delayed care.

Making a change now can:

  • Lower out-of-pocket costs
  • Restore access to your doctors
  • Improve prescription coverage
  • Reduce stress and confusion for the rest of the year

Every Situation Is Different

There is no “one-size-fits-all” Medicare plan. What worked well last year, or what looked good on paper, may not be the best fit now that you’re actually using it.

That’s why it’s important to review:

  • Your medications
  • Your doctors and specialists
  • Your expected healthcare needs for the year
  • Your budget and comfort with copays
